BRIEF STATEMENT (1994):

In contrast to the exuberant expressionism of earlier paintings, my current work, while still gestural, is more atmospheric and restrained.  My palette has become more subdued, although colorism remains a central concern. Working with drawings, monotypes and oils on canvas, I use  gestural motifs from nature and figure to create a dialogue between lyrical expressionism and quietness or emptiness.  Using abstract references to roots, limbs, cliffs and embankments, each work usually reports on some natural source; however, each is mainly about its own immediacy as an abstraction.  I sometimes also work with lithography, intaglio, silk-screen, pastel, computer imaging, photography and multi-media relief.
